A mantra for a friend for 2012. One to beat this one. Despite how good the song is.

Of all the strangers you’re the strangest that I’ve seen.

Saturday, November 19, 2011

Today I wandered up to my sister’s room to do my usual scan of her bookcase when I come home to see if anything catches my eye that happened to not catch my eye the million times I’ve done this before.

Today I found quite the gem. “Ten Things I Wish I’d Known - Before I Went Out into the Real World.” How appropriate. I haven’t read it yet, but these ten things include:

1) First and Foremost: Pinpoint Your Passion [gahhhh I don’t know what my passion is… and it seems this is everyone’s advice for finding a job.]

2) No Job Is Beneath You [I’m willing to pretty much take any job anywhere anyone will offer me something]

3) Who You Work for and with Is As Important As What You Do [does this not contradict #1 in some ways?]

4) Your Behavior Has Consequences [as it does for your whole life. maybe this is a whole different ballgame]

5) Be Willing to Fail [I hate failing, even at things like card games]

6) Superwoman Is Dead

7) Children Do Change Your Career (Not to Mention Your Entire Life)

8) Marriage Is a Hell of a Lot of Hard Work [good to know]

9) Don’t Expect Anyone Else to Support You Financially [shoot. Despite my strong independence from a young age, I was banking on this for my likely low paying job]

10) Laughter

I may have some doubts about this book and Ms. Maria Shriver’s advice, but this should be a good read. Can’t wait.

In the meantime, I’m figuring out a way to avoid all questions about my future and all unsolicited advice this Thanksgiving. And a way to be thankful for opportunities to grow, to be open-minded, and to trust.

One of the mixed blessings of being twenty and twenty one and even twenty three is the conviction that nothing like this, all evidence to the contrary notwithstanding, has ever happened to anyone before. Joan Didion, Goodbye To All That, 1968. (via xelvinn) [interview here] (via nprfreshair)
